In 2005 the Elgin-St. Thomas United Way, along with 16 other United Ways, recieved a 30 month grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, to conduct community consultations in each part of Elgin County and identify community priorities using an asset-based approach.

After eight community consultations, the following priorities were identified for Elgin County:

  • Youth
  • Poverty and Unemployment
  • Medical and Mental Health Issues
In April of 2006, United Way conducted several town hall meetings where the findings from our 2005 community consultations were discussed and our priorities further defined.

The goal of United Way is to more closely align ourselves with the needs of our community at large. This may result in changes to our Allocations process, and will result in even greater accountability on the part of United Way and the agencies we fund.

United Way of Elgin-St. Thomas is committed to building a strong and healthy community for all. The role of United Way is to match the resources of the community (the fundraising campaign) to those areas of greatest need.

    • The Elgin-St. Thomas United Way along with 16 other smaller United Ways received a grant in 2005 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
    • During the week of May 16, 2005 we conducted 8 community consultations throughout Elgin County.
    • Through this process we identified community and collective priorities.
    • A formal report will be provided to the Ontario Trillium Foundation. As well, the information collected will have an impact on Trillium granting and united allocations in the next several years.
    • In 2006 we will return to our original community consultation sites to conduct town hall meetings and to look deeper at the next steps of this process.
